Interview with Ian Cook, aka Popbang Colour.
When did your passion for cars begin?
I’ve always had a passion and interest in cars.
I’m from Solihull (West Midlands, UK), the town where the Land Rover factory is. My uncle worked in the car industry all his life and I wanted to be a car designer like he was. When I did a week’s ‘work experience’ with him I realized that I wasn’t an engineer – but an artist.
I’ve always loved the aesthetics of vehicles, and that’s where my interest and passion really lies.
Then again I’ve always used cars, toys and color in my artwork, but another reason why the whole thing might have started is when I got given a radio control car for Christmas a few years ago and someone said “Don’t take it down your studio, and don’t get paint on it!”…. Oooops!
Why do you use car parts and model cars to paint cars?
For me it makes sense to create cars using radio control cars at car related events. Is that a crime?
Anyway, it’s mainly because of the way I apply paint. The style of my artwork is very much about how the paint is moved around the canvas or paper I create on.
These days my creative process is very different to how it started out. At first my artworks were color wheel abstracts, then moved on to logos, then portraits and then cars.
Now I concentrate mainly on cars or other vehicles.
Have you ever dreamt of being a driver?
I’ve done go-karting before and I really enjoyed the competition and experience.
Through my work I’ve also been to lot of different kinds of motorsport events (F1, BTCC, WTCC, WRC, Endurance Racing) and I’d love to get the chance to take a car around a track. I’m an extremely competitive person.
Have you got a car? What car is it?
Yes, I’ve got a Chevrolet Spark, one of my associate sponsors is Chevrolet UK and last year when the car was released in the UK, I painted at its launch.
Anyway, it’s called the ‘SpART’ like in art Spark. It’s covered with my artwork and has Popbang Colour vinyls that made it look like a race car.
I’ve also got a van that takes all my equipment to events….
What’s the most beautiful car you’ve ever painted?
I’ve been really lucky to be able to paint Aston Martins, Classic Porsches and lots of other awesome road and race cars. Though it’s hard to pick one particular favorite I could call the most ‘beautiful’, I’d probably say the Ferrari 458 Italia is my personal favorite.
Second favorite is the Aston Martin Vantage GT2 and third the Audi R8.
What would you paint the Sparco logo with?
I’ve got a fleet of radio control cars I can create the Sparco logo with. It includes an awesome Nissan GT-R, a rally ready Subaru WRX, a fully American Shelby Mustang, a bumblebee liveried Chevrolet Camaro and a 4×4 Range Rover, to name but a few …there’s a fleet of 20 that I’ll be using on the Sparco logo!
